TIL that U.S. Congressman John Reilly bought the South Fork Dam, sold the dam's critical sluice pipes for scrap, then resold the dam to a club for wealthy families. Further alterations resulted in a failure that killed 2,209 people and destroyed 1,600 homes. No damages were paid.
