TIL when seeking an alternative to scarce copper for the Manhattan Project, Manhattan asked the Treasury for 6,000 tons of silver and were told that the Treasury did not deal in tons, their unit was the Troy ounce. Manhattan would eventually borrow 408 million Troy oz (14,000 tons) of silver.
