TIL that Dame schools were small, privately run schools for children aged 2–5 in early modern Britain and its colonies. They were run by a “school dame,” a local woman who taught reading, writing, arithmetic, and for girls, knitting or sewing. They lasted until mid-19th-century compulsory education.
