TIL in November 1961 an East German defector arrived in Japan. Using engineering knowledge he had gained in the GDR, he designed Suzuki's new 50cc and 125cc racers and rode them at international Grand Prix events. By October 1962, he had won Suzuki's first World Championship in the 50cc class.
