TIL racing icon Carroll Shelby helped found the Chili’s restaurant chain. After Shelby held what is widely recognized as the first organized chili cook-off in 1967, his son-in-law approached him with a proposal for a chili-themed restaurant. Shelby provided funding and curated the menu and design.
