TIL there was an openly transgender man who served as a colonel who served Zapata in the Mexican Revolution named Amelio Ávila. He lived openly as a man from the age of 24 and if somebody referred to him as a woman, he would threaten them with his pistol. He died in 1984 at the age of 95.
