His abdomen was ripped open by shrapnel, but he held in his intestines with his arm and continued directing fire until he died. He was awarded the Medal of Honor 151 years later.

They were facing each other on-site when they agreed to call a truce. Later in life, Lincoln made it clear he did not wish to discuss this incident.
