1st Street looking south towards Fremont St. On the far corner, “Dep-” is Thomas Department Store, 25 Fremont. The Opera House was on the second floor. The larger building further in the distance is the Ice House.

The photo is from a panorama by Herbert T. Shaw. It was dated 1910 by C.P. Squires in the 5/13/37 edition Las Vegas Evening Review-Journal; also dated 1910 in the 1/19/49 Review-Journal which says it’s taken from a 2nd floor window at the Arizona Club.

Buy War Bonds painted on 18 Fremont St; State Cafe, Las Vegas BBQ, Ethel’s Liquor, and Las Vegas Pharmacy. The upstairs portion of the pharmacy building was the Oak Hotel from the 20s to ‘42, then La Bonita Hotel through the 50s when the building was demolished.

“The hotel where I was born at 1st and Fremont … My grandparents operated the Oak Hotel. When one of the relatives from an outlying area was due to give birth they would move into the hotel so they could be closer to medical help if needed. It was cheaper and more convenient than the hospital. My birth certificate says I was born in Las Vegas at the Oak Hotel and I was delivered alive by a M.D.” - John Jansen, told to Vintage Las Vegas.

Undated photos. The first is late 80s to early 90s, the second is late ‘91 to ‘94. The only difference here is that Golden Goose and Glitter Gulch casinos have been turned into a strip club, The Girls of Glitter Gulch. Owner Herb Pastor remodeled and connected the two businesses over Thanksgiving weekend, as he explained, “while the city council was at home and not paying attention.” 

TOPLESS BAR IRKS OFFICIALS. The city ordered Herb Pastor to close his doors because he didn’t properly notify the city that the facility was becoming a sexually oriented business. “I think that is the worst thing that could ever happen to Fremont Street,” Mayor Jan Jones said. “A topless bar is inconsistent with the image the city is trying to create in downtown.” - Review Journal, 12/4/91

The Girls of Glitter Gulch remained in business until 2016.

Completed Fall 1906, south-east corner of Fremont & 1st. Ground floor was home to Wilson Drug Co. (‘06-11), Wharton Drug Co. (‘11-‘15), and Las Vegas Pharmacy (‘15-‘55).
