Which actor has the most minifigures?

Licensed LEGO themes first emerged in 1999 with Star Wars and Winnie the Pooh and have since yielded hundreds of sets containing thousands of minifigures. Many of these minifigures, be they from a film or television series, are based on a particular actor and this has provoked a great deal of debate regarding which actor has the most minifigures.

This article aims to definitively answer that question.

Before I begin, I should clarify how a minifigure representation of an actor is being defined for the purposes of this article:

  • A minifigure which directly represents an actor in a film or television series.
  • A minifigure or character* voiced by an actor in a film or television series.
  • The minifigure or character must be based directly on a film or television series**.
  • Multiple minifigures of the same character are not counted, unless they appear in different media.
  • Acting credits are counted according to IMDB.

* A character includes any conscious being which does not include the two minifigure elements necessary to constitute a minifigure.

** For instance, the Nick Fury minifigure in 76004 Spider-Man: Spider-Cycle Chase does not count towards Samuel L. Jackson's total, but the Nick Fury minifigure in 76042 SHIELD Helicarrier does.

Actors with two minifigures:

  • Will Arnett - Batman (The LEGO Movie), Vernon Fenwick (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles)
  • Sean Astin - Samwise Gamgee (Lord of the Rings), Raphael (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles)
  • Kenny Baker - R2-D2 (Star Wars), Paploo (Star Wars)

  • Matthew Wood - General Grievous (Star Wars), General Grievous (Star Wars), Battle Droid(s) (Star Wars)

Actors with seven minifigures or more:

Dee Bradley Baker is the winner with a total of twelve minifigures or characters! All twelve are based on voice performances and the majority are from Star Wars: The Clone Wars.

The list is quite different with voice performances removed:

  • Kenny Baker - R2-D2 (Star Wars), Paploo (Star Wars)
  • Cate Blanchett - Irina Spalko (Indiana Jones), Galadriel (The Hobbit)

Ian McKellen - Magneto/Gandalf and
John Rhys-Davies - Salah/Gimli

Thanks for doing with and without voice actors. Mark Hamill would have Joker (voice) as well from Batman cartoon.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

@Joehead14 - Neither of the two Magneto minifigures are based on Sir Ian McKellen's movie performances and there has never been a Sallah minifigure. Mark Hamill's Joker does not count either as none of the minifigures released are based directly on his animated portrayals.

By in United States,

Clancy Brown should get bumped to four, as he was Luthor in 'Lego Batman: The Movie'. (He was also Luthor in the Lego DC games, but those weren't part of your criteria).

Dee Bradley Baker also gets bumped for his various Lego movie roles (Martian Manhunter, Man-Bat, etc).

I'd discount most other actors (like Mark Hamill) for their cartoon roles, as their performances aren't related to "official Lego".

Some surprising results there!

By in United States,

Ok. But Magneto in DOFP is the old guy face and that set came out at the same time as the movie - I would argue that counts even though it wasn't labelled as a DOFP movie toy. Marvel doesn't blatantly do specific Lego sets for Fox and Sony movies with the title on the box (Electro and Wolverine sets). Is this also why you don't count James Badge Dale for Dan Reid (Lone Ranger) and Savin / Extremis Soldier from Iron Man 3? He is the guy in the helicopter in the scene that the Malibu set is based off of (you gotta give me one of these).

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

@tttwlam - Were there any minifigures based directly off of those portrayals? Genuinely curious, because at the moment it seems like those were portrayals based on figures, rather than the other way round.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I thought there would also be a calculation of how many minifigs were manufactured for each person so we would know who has the most minifig versions of themselves out there in the world. I suspect it may be Harrison Ford as there have been a lot of sets sold with him in them.

By in United Kingdom,

Good article! I have quite a few of Dee Bradley Baker's characters, because I collect Clone Troopers.

Gravatar
By in United States,

@kazar14:

Clancy Brown was Luthor in the 1990s Superman cartoon, the 2000s JLI shows, and multiple direct-to-DVD features.

And Luthor's Lego "black suit and tie" look is directly inspired by the Superman show, as in the comics, he was a portly Kingpin analog before.

I'd say it counts. But I didn't make the list! :)

Gravatar
By in United States,

Don't forget Mark Hamill. Luke Skywalker and the Joker's voice. And he also voices a lot of others.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Does Temuera Morrison count for boba fett too since he was redubbed for the new and currently only official releases of ESB and ROTJ and you could argue that the carbon freezing chamber is post dubbing... :)

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

@KingDave - Indeed it would be Harrison Ford, with a total of 53.

@rab1234 - I am not certain about that minifigure but there is one in 75098 Assault on Hoth which is certainly based on Major Derlin, so his total has been increased to three.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Thank you for making a list without voice actors as it is more interesting to see which actors have had the most Lego forms. I knew it was Alfred Molina!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Interesting reading. Where as some minifigures are a clear representation of the actor it is also a case that a lot of the minifigures are not based on the actor at all, this is especially true of voice actors and cartoons. Clearly the physical representation of Bart Simpson isn't based on Nancy Cartwright so I'm glad you separated out the voice acting credits as they do skew the data.

As Andy Serkis plays Gollum in LoTR (albeit animated using elements of motion capture) and also voices the Witch-King should he deserve a 2 minifigure mention?

All the clone troopers also somewhat skew the figures as they are clones & therefore likely to sound similar, hence lots of minifigure credits for Dee Bradley Baker. As Temuera Morrison plays Jango Fett who is the 'father' of all the clone troopers should he not get more than 2 minifigure credits (he did play and voice lots of clones)?

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

@Lyicihir - I omitted LEGO's original properties and focused on licensed themes. I would argue that those minifigures are not based on the television series but the other way around.

@Bricklunch - Regarding the Clone Troopers, I worked on the basis that only distinct named characters would count individually and that groups of characters would count as a single entry. Dee Bradley Baker's various Clone officers are all distinct named characters and are therefore counted individually.

By in United Kingdom,

Hello to Jason Isaacs! Perhaps another article could be on just likeness then vocal talent?

Gravatar
By in United States,

@CapnRex101: That would be a good grounds for exclusion, except as I mentioned, you did include The Lego Movie—and Will Arnett's Batman in particular was not a figure originally designed for that movie or for that specific actor's portrayal.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Silas Carson also played Ki-Adi-Mundi, so thats 3 for him.

Gravatar
By in United States,

All this list is doing's making me adore Dee Bradley Baker's vocal talent and diversity so much more.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

@Lyichir - But the version of Batman we see in The LEGO Movie is distinct from the versions seen in other media and Arnett's performance is also distinct. The character of Batman may have existed previously but it was adapted for The LEGO Movie in the same way that Christian Bale's Batman is distinct from Ben Affleck's version.

@darthdc - The only Ki-Adi Mundi minifigure released to date is based on Star Wars: The Clone Wars rather than the live action movies. It does not therefore count towards Carson's total.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Great article! There are some very surprising appearances on there.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I'm not sure I'd count the Cars sets as 'minifigures'

Gravatar
By in United States,

@CapnRex101: My point was that the Lego Batman used in the movie and the first year of Lego Movie sets is NOT a unique or original figure design—the entire figure dates back to 2012, two years before The Lego Movie was released. Though I suppose it's fair to argue that the Batman from the second year of Lego Movie sets does specifically represent Will Arnett's portrayal, since that was a unique variant with the distinctive exaggerated facial expressions the movie character rather than just a reused figure from a previous year. It's really just a question of where you draw the line, and considering your argument I suppose your exclusion of Lego-created characters makes sense.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

@52scoobydoo... Hello to Jason Isaacs! ... I know your sort....

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

Dee Bradley Baker gets the credits for Commander Gree, but there's also an Ep III minifig version of Gree. In Ep III he was voiced by Temuera Morrison.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

@CapnRex101 - Thanks for the clarification. Seems to be a topic that opens up a whole host of brain aches.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Shouldn't Warwick Davis get 4 in the actor only part? As well as voicing Griphook he played him in the final film.

Gravatar
By in United States,

The list for Temuera Morrison feels incomplete. You list Jango, the clones (as a whole), and Commander Gree. What about Captain Jag from set 8088? That's an Episode III set and Jag is distinctly named. Also, Morrison has been the voice of adult Boba in the re-releases of the OT since 2004. Any Boba minifig from an OT set post-2004 should qualify him.

Gravatar
By in Norway,

Why isn't Warwick Davis listed with four in the category that excludes voice acting? He plays the part physically, so he should either be in both, or neither, as the minifigure in question is really just a plain goblin.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

@jsworpin and @J0rgen - Verne Troyer plays Griphook physically in Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, on which both 4714 and the relevant section of 10217 are based. Warwick Davis voices the character and later plays him in both parts of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.

Gravatar
By in United States,

@kazar Technically I would count a few minifigures as being based off of characters because they appeared in the Ninjago tv series first. For example, the minifigures of Dareth and Misako in Temple of Airjitzu appeared 3 years earlier in the show than they did in the sets.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Tom Kenny also voiced Rocka from Hero factory who has a minifig.

Gravatar
By in France,

If you filter through the Simpsons (ie look at the second list) that's really interesting and reminded me of quite a few performances that I forgot were actually in minifigure form. Chris Pratt takes the award for most minifigures produced in quick succession though I'd imagine, all in the space of only a year and a half.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I noticed Mixels aren't counted. If they were, Tom Kenny would have much more...

Gravatar
By in United States,

Clancy Brown voices Task Master in the Ultimate Spider-Man TV series. Lego's minifig of Task Master is based off the first iteration of his costume from the show (which in turn was inspired by the comics).

Gravatar
By in United States,

Excellent article, and I'm enjoying the debates in the comments too!

Gravatar
By in United States,

The argument could be made that you've left out Sam Witwer at 2 or 3 minifigures:

- Darth Maul (Clone Wars: 75022)
- Vader's Secret Apprentice Galen Marek (Force Unleashed: 7672) - this was a game, but had a licensed set and the character's appearance/performance/voice was based on the actor. Undeniably a Sam Witwer minifigure

Arguable:
- Mandalorian Super Commando (Clone Wars: 75022) and credited as such on IMDB

Gravatar
By in Spain,

Mark Hamill voiced The Trickster for the movie Lego Justice League: Attack of the Legion of Doom and it have a real minifig included. It's the same argument used to Will Arnett's Batman in Lego Movie.
http://brickset.com/sets/DCSHDVD2-1/Justice-League-Attack-of-the-Legion-of-Doom-DVD-Blu-ray

The Joker from Batman And Joker (SDCC 2008 exclusive) definitively is Mark Hamill. It's based on his Joker for Batman: The Animated Series.
http://brickset.com/sets/COMCON003-1/Batman-And-Joker-%28SDCC-2008-exclusive%29
"LEGO designers have stated that they designed this version of the Joker to look like Mark Hamill's representation of the character, as seen on the popular television program from the nineties, Batman: The Animated Series. "
http://lego.wikia.com/wiki/The_Joker

I think it's official enough.
He voiced The Joker so many times that he basically is the official Joker voice. Probably there even more sets based on other Batman movies and tv series that he voiced.

He also voiced some Hero Factory: Black Phantom and Von Nebula, but it probably doesn't count as minifigs.
http://lego.wikia.com/wiki/6203_Black_Phantom
http://lego.wikia.com/wiki/7145_Von_Nebula

And obviously Luke Skywalker.
Mark Hamill have a close relationship with TLG.

Gravatar
By in United States,

As for the actors list, I was sure Alfred Molina was going to be the winner. But, haha, I totally forgot about Warwick Davis. I'm disregarding the voice actors for their portrayals. Fascinating article, btw.

Gravatar
By in Canada,

Cool article...I would like to see more like it. Thanks for doing all that research!

Gravatar
By in United States,

Hugo Weaving:
Red Skull and Elrond

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I would like to see how many there are counting all varients. There are about 26 different Han Solo minifigures before adding Indiana Jones.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I completly agree with you hardwax that would be great

Gravatar
By in United States,

I have been thoroughly impressed by the novelty and quality of Brickset articles this past week or so. You've set the bar quite high for yourselves! Keep up the great work!

Gravatar
By in Canada,

Interesting article! Thanks!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

You could include Corey Burton. He played Count Dooku, Cad Bane, Shahan Alama in Clone Wars.

Gravatar
By in Puerto Rico,

Interesting list, and it has sparked a debate in the page. Also RIP Sir Christopher Lee, your minifigures are treasured.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Thank you for covering this interesting topic. I was surprised at what I didn't know/had forgotten! :)

Gravatar
By in United States,

Matthew Wood:
-General Grievous (Episodes II and III: 7255, 75040, 7656)
-General Grievous (The Clone Wars TV series: 8095, 9515)
-Battle Droids (Clone Wars movie: set 7675 is based on the movie)
-Battle Droids (Clone Wars TV series: many CW TV sets)

According to your rules, "Multiple minifigures of the same character are not counted, unless they appear in different media," and Wood has voiced the above across 3 movies and a TV series.

And by including "Clone Troopers" in Dee Bradley Baker's list, I would think Battle Droids should count for Wood as he did the bulk of their voices.

At the very least, he gets a "2" for Grievous.

Gravatar
By in United States,

There needs to be a medium compromise with voice acting. Like giving credit for a production despite the number of characters portrayed in that production. That would give Dee Bradley Baker three credits instead of 11.

Gravatar
By in United States,

James Earl Jones should be listed with 2 according to the "different media" rule:

Darth Vader (Episodes III, IV, V, VI)
Darth Vader (Star Wars Rebels: 75150)

Gravatar
By in United States,

Don't forget Frank Welker, Don Messick, and the rest of the cast of the various Scooby Doo series

Gravatar
By in United States,

@ltc Don, I agree with your comment about voice actors. Those Simpsons actors do a ton of voices all for the same show

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Thanks for your suggestions everyone. I have updated the list.

@ltc don - The idea of this list is to allow readers to decide for themselves according to their own specifications for what constitutes a minifigure version of an actor. I have tried to include the maximum number so readers can narrow it down according to their definition.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Also missing is SW actor Jack Purvis; who played the Chief Jawa in A New Hope, the Chief Ugnaught in The Empire Strikes Back, and Teebo in Return of the Jedi. Each has a LEGO counterpart.

Gravatar
By in Canada,

You forgot Griphook for Warwick Davis's entry in the second list.

Gravatar
By in New Zealand,

Cool article, have always wondered this. I think the voice actors are a separate situation, definitely there is more weight behind people who have had actual minifigures modeled after them.

Gravatar
By in Greece,

Voice acting doesn't cut it for me. I would have formed the list only with distinctive actors appearing on the stage and not with actors voice-acting some cartoon character (unless said character looks like the actor himself/herself). More closely to your second approach on the list CapnRex101.

Gravatar
By in Canada,

Harrison ford who plays HanSolo and Indiana jones for sure

Gravatar
By in Russian Federation,

So what about Christian Bale and Heath Ledger, which both are in the "76023 The Tumbler"?

Gravatar
By in United States,

Mark Hamill would also have Black Phantom and Von Nebula from Hero Factory (but those don't count) :D
