Three-year-old awarded for saving her heavily pregnant mum with 999 call

A three-year-old girl has been praised for saving her heavily pregnant mother with a 999 call after she fell down the stairs at their home.

Emma Bazzard calmly answered questions from call handler Sarah Morris when her mother Catherine fell down the stairs at their home in Nailsea near Bristol in November and became unconscious.

Catherine had landed on her stomach and it is believed the impact started labour.

Paramedics took her to hospital where she was given drugs needed to prevent her unborn baby boy arriving seven weeks early.

Since the fall, which happened in November, Catherine has safely given birth to Emma's little brother.

Today all three of them were reunited with the ambulance crew and call handler at Nailsea ambulance station. The youngster was also presented with a bravery certificate for how she handled the 999 call.

Catherine said: “I do not recall a great deal about the incident, but by all accounts Emma was absolutely amazing and so knowledgeable and calm.

"I think this highlights how important it is to teach your child how to call 999 because they are never too young to put what they’ve learnt into practice. I couldn’t be more proud of Emma."

Ms Morris, who handled the call, said: “When I first spoke to the little girl I knew that she was young, but was amazed to discover that she was only three.

"The amount of detail she was able to provide was incredible; she answered every question I put to her more calmly than most adults under similar circumstances."

During the call, Ms Morris - who stayed on the line until the ambulance arrived - praised the young caller as "very clever".
