At 10,554 square miles, Massachusetts is the 44th smallest biggest state in the union in terms of area, bigger only than New England neighbors Rhode Island, Connecticut, New Hampshire, and Vermont as well as Delaware and New Jersey.
Globally, it’s a different story. Were Massachusetts an independent nation, it would be bigger than nearly 70 countries, including Slovenia (the contours of which are rendered above against our commonwealth’s borders). Other countries that Massachusetts would dwarf include Israel, Kosovo, Swaziland, and Lebanon.
