ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- A Rochester Uber driver found himself with a famous passenger on Monday.

"He’s like, 'Are you ready for a long ride?'” said the driver, John Costello, of Lyons.

Costello picked up comedian and actor Joel McHale. McHale found himself stuck in Rochester when his flight was cancelled. He was on his way to New York City for The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon.

Costello agreed to make the six hour trip to New York City so McHale wouldn't miss the show. He says McHale was in Rochester to catch a flight after doing a show in Ithaca.

He admits it took some time to realize it was McHale who needed the ride.

"He was in everyday clothes, I didn’t know he was a celebrity at first, and he didn’t present himself as one," said Costello. "So when he got in the car and revealed himself, I was like, ‘Oh my God.’"

McHale joked on Instagram that the two were hydroplaning all the way to the city.

Costello says the two passed time during the long ride by talking about faith, sports, and politics.

They shared a few laughs, too.

"He’s as funny as he is on TV," said Costello. "A great man, very humble, super generous."

The trip came to $692. Costello says McHale also tipped him an additional $200 and paid for his gas.

"He was the most humble, most generous, definitely one of the most funny people I’ve ever met," said Costello. "I didn’t have a prejudgment of him, but he turned out to be a much better guy than I expected."
