Hippopotomonstrosesquippedaliophobia is the fear of long words. It is a word that is mostly a joke in the fact that it is a long word itself but can also cause panic attacks and anxiety. [1] The word for this phobia is one of the longest words in the English Language, behind some other scientific words like chemical or disease names, such as Pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis,[2] a disease caused by breathing silica dust. In which the longest word, pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis, is 45 letters long. The possible cause of Hippopotomonstrosesquippedaliophobia, would be related to a traumatic time learning spelling.[source?]

The American Psychiatric Association (APA) does not officially recognize this phobia. Instead, hippopotomonstrosesquippedaliophobia is considered a social phobia. However, there is not much evidence people actually have it. [3]
