ORIGIN
Prince was a famous singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, record producer, and actor born out of Minneapolis, Minnesota. He achieved international fame in the 1980s. Prince has reportedly changed his name four times throughout his lifetime. Prince Roger Nelson was born on June 7, 1958, to mother Mattie Della (a Jazz performer) and father John Nelson (a pianist). Though they separated throughout his youth, music had a major impact on Prince’s life. Prince later formed a music band with friends called Champagne which saw minimal success.
CAREER
As a teenager, Prince began working on high-quality tracks. At age 18, he signed a recording contract with Warner Brothers Record as the youngest producer. In 1978, Prince kicked off his career with his debut album “For You.” He would release three more albums in the next 3 years: Prince (1979), Dirty Mind (1980), and Controversy (1981). Some of Prince’s music contained sexually explicit material. For a beginner artist, his initial albums did fairly well, however, they were not the best. Some of his songs did stir controversy with fans, due to their blend of religious and sexual themes.
Prince exploded into the spotlight with the release of his next album 1999 and Purple Rain, released in 1982 and 1984 respectively. The hit albums rewarded him with international fame and success. A movie was also made after the album Purple Rain which Prince starred in. By the late 1980s, Prince had become one of the most successful Pop artists. Not only was he a successful artist, but Prince was also a multi-instrumentalist. He has reportedly mastered every instrument involved in his music production. He was widely known for being very protective and selective with his music. He tends to perform most of the instruments on his tracks.
In recent years, Prince performed at the 2004 Grammy’s with Beyonce. That same year, he released the album Musicology which became very successful. The album rewarded him with 2 Grammys. In 2006, Prince was tossed back into the limelight with the release of “Song of the Heart” for the animated film Happy Feet. As a result, he won a golden globe for it. Outside of music, things became weird.
Prince changed his name at least 4 times throughout his lifetime; The Purple One, The artist formerly known as Prince, and Jamie Starr just to name a few. He also changed his name to some unpronounceable symbol.
